Pregnancy can be an exiting & scary time for expectant mothers. There are many emotional & physiological changes within the body. Fears over how to cope financially may also be a factor. Here are some possibilities in pregnancy, many of which can be alleviated by use of essential oils e.g. an aromatherapy massage.
Insomnia in pregnancy can happen when sleep becomes erratic and broken due to the need to pass urine more frequently, heartburn and later, the baby moving at night. This can be thought of as a practice for broken sleep once the baby is born.
Nausea is an early sign of early pregnancy and one of the less enjoyable possibilities in pregnancy.
Indigestion & Flatulence
Hormones released by the placenta relax the digestive tract. The reduced activity means that the stomach is emptied slower, leaving a feeling of fullness or longer. It is better to eat smaller meals, slowly (trying not to gulp in air) during the 3rd trimester. Also the muscular valve entrance to the stomach may relax, allowing acids to leak back up the oesophagus, causing heartburn. A gentle massage with Mandarin essential oil may help and may be included in a pregnancy massage.
Constipation can be due to high levels of the hormone progesterone. It can also be due to the general slowing down of digestive activity. It is important to drink water & eat raw vegetables. If constipation occurs however you may like to take a natural laxative such as dried prunes or figs, broccoli & cabbage. Massaging the abdomen in gentle circular movements with Patchouli essential oil is excellent to help ease constipation.
Sore or swollen breasts
Breasts can become fuller warmer, heavier and tender at the beginning of pregnancy. Of the possibilities in pregnancy this is not unexpected or usually cause for concern.
It helps to keep your feet up as often as possible For at least 10 minutes a day lie with a pillow in the small of your back and another at the nape of your neck – not under your head. Whilst in a relaxing repose you may like to send loving affirmative thoughts to your baby, for positive thinking makes positive things happen Thought projection is one of the oldest treatments. Also a little gentle exercise even on the spot can help. A very light touch is used to massage the legs from the ankle upwards
Haemorrhoids or piles are better to be avoided than alleviated. The main thing to remember is not to strain. Also to follow the advice of plenty of water & fresh vegetables. Don’t worry too much about all the possibilities in pregnancy If haemorroids do occur an aromatherapy cream can be prepared using the essential oils of Cypress & Geranium and a tube of KY jelly to alleviate the symptoms and act as a preventative.
Cramps in the legs
Cramps in the legs are sometimes mentioned as one of the possibilities in pregnancy. They can be caused by dehydration & lack of calcium in the body. (Consider taking a supplement or eat a good supply of Pumpkin seeds and plenty of green leafy vegetables. An aromatherapy mixture can be made up for you for use as a footbath and can be a great success.
A successful aromatherapy mixture for stretch marks can be given to the expectant mother to be. Stretch marks generally occur on the lower & upper abdomen, thighs & buttocks. The aromatherapy mixture may include almond oil, wheatgerm oil, borage seed oil & carrot oil with the most uplifting oil of orange blossom or Neroli essential oil.
The essential oils to be avoided during pregnancy due to them being uterine contractors may be used to help stimulate the uterus and hopefully speed up the onset of labour. The essential oils to consider are Jasmine, Clary Sage and Lavender. They also happen to be euphoric which is definitely a bonus if you are in the ‘waiting’ stage!
Many women go through their pregnancy with none or few of these possibilities in pregnancy. A regular aromatherapy massage will create a feeling of well-being, a chance to relax and also to iron out aches & pains as they occur.
