Possibilities in Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be an exiting & scary time for expectant mothers. There are many emotional & physiological changes within the body. Fears over how to cope financially may also be a factor. Here are some possibilities in pregnancy, many of which can be alleviated by use of essential oils e.g. an aromatherapy massage.

Insomnia
Insomnia in pregnancy can happen when sleep becomes erratic and broken due to the need to pass urine more frequently, heartburn and later, the baby moving at night. This can be thought of as a practice for broken sleep once the baby is born.

Nausea
Nausea is an early sign of early pregnancy and one of the less enjoyable possibilities in pregnancy.

Indigestion & Flatulence
Hormones released by the placenta relax the digestive tract. The reduced activity means that the stomach is emptied slower, leaving a feeling of fullness or longer. It is better to eat smaller meals, slowly (trying not to gulp in air) during the 3rd trimester. Also the muscular valve entrance to the stomach may relax, allowing acids to leak back up the oesophagus, causing heartburn. A gentle massage with Mandarin essential oil may help and may be included in a pregnancy massage.

Constipation
Constipation can be due to high levels of the hormone progesterone. It can also be due to the general slowing down of digestive activity. It is important to drink water & eat raw vegetables. If constipation occurs however you may like to take a natural laxative such as dried prunes or figs, broccoli & cabbage. Massaging the abdomen in gentle circular movements with Patchouli essential oil is excellent to help ease constipation.

Sore or swollen breasts
Breasts can become fuller warmer, heavier and tender at the beginning of pregnancy. Of the possibilities in pregnancy this is not unexpected or usually cause for concern.

Varicose veins
It helps to keep your feet up as often as possible For at least 10 minutes a day lie with a pillow in the small of your back and another at the nape of your neck – not under your head. Whilst in a relaxing repose you may like to send loving affirmative thoughts to your baby, for positive thinking makes positive things happen Thought projection is one of the oldest treatments. Also a little gentle exercise even on the spot can help. A very light touch is used to massage the legs from the ankle upwards

Haemorrhoids
Haemorrhoids or piles are better to be avoided than alleviated. The main thing to remember is not to strain. Also to follow the advice of plenty of water & fresh vegetables. Don’t worry too much about all the possibilities in pregnancy If haemorroids do occur an aromatherapy cream can be prepared using the essential oils of Cypress & Geranium and a tube of KY jelly to alleviate the symptoms and act as a preventative.

Cramps in the legs
Cramps in the legs are sometimes mentioned as one of the possibilities in pregnancy. They can be caused by dehydration & lack of calcium in the body. (Consider taking a supplement or eat a good supply of Pumpkin seeds and plenty of green leafy vegetables. An aromatherapy mixture can be made up for you for use as a footbath and can be a great success.

Stretch Marks
A successful aromatherapy mixture for stretch marks can be given to the expectant mother to be. Stretch marks generally occur on the lower & upper abdomen, thighs & buttocks. The aromatherapy mixture may include almond oil, wheatgerm oil, borage seed oil & carrot oil with the most uplifting oil of orange blossom or Neroli essential oil.

Overdue babies
The essential oils to be avoided during pregnancy due to them being uterine contractors may be used to help stimulate the uterus and hopefully speed up the onset of labour. The essential oils to consider are Jasmine, Clary Sage and Lavender. They also happen to be euphoric which is definitely a bonus if you are in the ‘waiting’ stage!

Many women go through their pregnancy with none or few of these possibilities in pregnancy. A regular aromatherapy massage will create a feeling of well-being, a chance to relax and also to iron out aches & pains as they occur.

Post Natal Depression

Pregnancy & childbirth is generally concidered to be a joyous occasion for all connected to the mother & indeed for herself. Lack of sleep. worry for the general wellbeing of a new born is natural for most new mothers. However during pregnancy endorphins come into the body in high concentrations. These act as natural pain killers  & help to give a feeling of euphoria . Once the placenta is expelled , oestrgen & progesterone levels fall very quickly (similar in feeling to PMT )

Usually  2 to 3 days after the birth it is normal to feel ‘the baby blues’ It may come from possible birth trauma, the change in hormones or even a realisation of the resposibilities of motherhood. This is within a normal expectation of emotions with a triggering of tears ,depression or even anger. usually this will pass in a few days.

However when this ‘depression’ continues the mother may need counselling  or even short term medication. Essential oils can be of great benefit (check with the doctor if using anti depressants )  These should be used in a 1% dilution as with pregnancy massage . Symptoms may also subside within 6 weeks of birth, so give yourself time to adjust

Bergamot is the best essential oil to throw off depression or ‘blues’. It calms the sympathetic nervous system & so allays anger & frustation. It can also help to regain a failing appetite.

Jasmine gives a feeling of courage & strength & has been known to enhance bonding with mother & baby.

Geranium balances feelings & helps bring harmony to mood swings

Frankincense helps to calm & relax the mind , helpling to bring in peace & tranquility.

Lavender has the ability to uplift where there may be tiredness or to help calm anxiety of nervous tension.

I would suggest a combination of receiving regular aromatherapy massage from a professional & sensitive therapist , who may be able to offer some nurchuring & energy enhansing  treatments  & some support or councelling .

Aromatherapy In Pregnancy

Using a combination of essential oils for aromatherapy in pregnancy, which are safe to use throughout throughout the pregnancy can alleviate some of the less pleasant effects of the changes experienced during pregnancy.

A normal dilution of essential oils to carrier oil is 2%, but during pregnancy this is reduced to 1% as the oils can pass across the placenta.

One of the first signs of pregnancy can be fatigue & tiredness, lasting up to 12 to 14 weeks. Sleep is the solution. The following essential oils can help:

  • 2 drops of Mandarin essential oil
  • 1 drop of Lavender essential oil
  • 1 drop of Ylang Ylang essential oil

These essential oils could be added to a warm (not hot) bath at the end of the day.

For help to sleep, perhaps to overcome insomnia due to broken sleep caused by the need to pass urine more frequently, heartburn and later, the baby moving at night, a mixture of the following essential oils may be included in a warm (not hot) bath just before bed:

  • Tangerine essential oil
  • Neroli essential oil
  • Lavender essential oil

To help relieve the sensation on nausea, massages for aromatherapy in pregnancy may include:

  • Ginger essential oil
  • Lemon essential oil

Also, after your aromatherapy massage

  • 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil on a pillow for 3 nights should also help.

To alleviate the symptoms of indigestion and flatulence using aromatherapy in pregnancy techniques consider

  •  gentle massage with Mandarin essential oil
    or
  •  a fennel essential oil mixture can be made up to massage the abdomen several times a day.

For sore or swollen breasts during pregnancy an aromatherapy in pregnancy approach may include use of a compress with the following essential oils laid across the breasts:

  • 2 drops of Lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops of Geranium essential oil

Aromatherapy in pregnancy may include use of essential oils to ease the effects of varicose veins. For example:

  •  Cypress essential oil has an astringent effect on the whole venous system & emotionally helps to balance the mind & alleviate anxieties.
  • Geranium essential oil encourages the circulation of blood.

Aromatherapists offering aromatherapy in pregnancy treatments using essential oils may suggest thathaemorrhoids or piles are better avoided than alleviated. If they do occur a cream can be made with Cypress essential oil & Geranium essential oil and a tube of KY jelly. This combination of KY jelly and aromatherapy will alleviate and act as a preventative.

A successful mixture of essential oils for stretch marks can be given to expectant mothers. Stretch marksgenerally occur on the lower & upper abdomen, thighs & buttocks. An aromatherapy in pregnancy blend of essential oils to minimize stretch marks may include a mixture of almond oil, wheatgerm oil, borage seed oil & carrot oil with the most uplifting oil of orange blossom or Neroli essential oil.
